  • The Chief Security Officer of Circle spoke to congress on the significance of USDC in the U.S. economy.
  • He stressed the role that the USDC and other stablecoins play in helping the dollar maintain its position as a leading currency.

The CSO and Head of Global Privacy at Circle recently spoke to Congress at a hearing centered around stablecoins. During the hearing, Dante Disparte who has been a part of Circle highlighted how Stablecoins advanced the U.S. competitiveness, as well as the security of the nation.

The Circle CSO recognized the growing fears of de-dollarization. He also acknowledged the increase in alternative payment systems that fall out of alignment with U.S. values. Disparte proceeded to propose the USDC and dollar-denominated payment stablecoins. Also, he cites them as options poised to ensure that the U.S. dollar maintains its position as the global currency of reference.

Going further, he spoke on one of Circle’s most notable partnerships, which showcased the possibilities that USDC offers, as well as the benefits of open and interoperable payment systems.

Last year, Circle, MoneyGram, and the Stellar Development Foundation partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The partnership allowed for the enablement of USDC as a means of digital dollar cash assistance, which will be used to support war-displaced refugees from Ukraine.

Additionally, he asserted that it allowed refugees in Ukraine to put forward their USDC funds at any MoneyGram location. This enabled refugees to convert their USDC from a payment stablecoin at a dollar exchange rate to a local currency. They can also use their USDC as a store of value or as an exchange medium in its digital form. Disparte added.

This project marks a breakthrough and a new humanitarian blueprint for moving funds in a near-instant, transparent, corruption-resistant and auditable manner, which is an exponential improvement over the cumbersome and risky process of moving aid and disaster relief money. As this project shows, rather than disrupt traditional banking and finance, the availability of trusted dollar-based payment stablecoins can help extend the perimeter of the formal economy and the utility value of internet native dollars even in extreme conflict zones.
